Perceptive Kid

If you were to ask me about what kind of a kid Ben is, I would stop and think as I always do. It depends on the type of day we had what where I would start. He is often anxious about change and doesn't like to be made to do things he isn't interested in. Rarely does he fight me when I ask him to do something but I have to watch to see that it gets done because he's keenly aware of how busy I am and how many balls I have juggling at that moment and will capitalize on my busyness and avoid a chore now and then knowing I won't notice for a few hours or days or won't be able to remember if I asked him to do it or another kid. He's observant.

Ben is quiet. He prefers to stay in the background of a scene. He's smart. He is amazing reader and devours books. This year he would check out a book a day and his goal was always go finish and return it in 24 hours. He succeeded a lot!

He loves Nerf guns and could play Nerf wars with his compound buddies all day long everyday. They have hideouts and strategies and a million guns between them all which they are constantly comparing and even trading. Not much in this world could make him smile as big as a package of neon colored foam bullets.

One thing I love to say about Ben is that he's a very thoughtful, perceptive child. I once asked him if he wanted to stay in Singapore, go on another adventure in another country or go back to America when we finished our first expat assignment. He said he wanted two more adventure assignments then he wanted to move back to America so he knew what it was like to live there before he went to college alone because he was already forgetting what it was like to be in America. He was only eight years old.

Now he's eleven and we have resided in two countries, traveled a ton and are relocating to Houston next month against our wishes. (We all wanted to stay in Saudi a few more years.) I asked last night while I trimmed his hair, so his ears would show again, if he liked expat life with all the moves, disappointments, losing friends every year and other frustrations mixed within the fun, new friends and adventures. Was the good worth the bad? Ben has really taken this move hard but even with all the mess of home schooling, grieving and loss we are feeling now he said it was definitely worth it. He wouldn't have wanted to miss what he had done so it was worth the sadness and pain. He'd be willing to move overseas again after we have some time in Texas.

Name Pronunciation Challenges

Singapore Memories:
My son Ben was told in Chinese class at the international school that his name translated as either "stupid", "notebook" or "pen" depending on the way you write the accent.

My name of course is Angie and over the phone in Singapore I got written down as the Asian surname "Ng". They assume I spelled my name for them, not said my name. When I show up a blue eyed white lady people are totally confused. I finally started using Angela for all phone conversations

Heeley Tennis Fun

While Ben had his actual lesson tonight the kids and Brian used the next court over to tossed balls to Jacob and Madison.

They both wore Heeley shoes with wheels on the bottom like roller skates and Madison seems a bit distracted with kicking her racket. It was funny to watch but they had a blast.

Ben is making progress in his lessons and seems fairly good with his swing.

And Ashlyn happily shagged balls.

FHE Pillowcase Sack Races and a New Couch

March 30, 2014
Last night was a hilarious night of Fanily Home Evening sack races. Ashlyn liked to pull her pillowcase up over her head so she couldn't see anything and then try to jump and walk.

After we finished we had some Twizzlers  from the special candy shop here in Singapore. And since mom gave away the kids couch this weekend they had to use the new couch I told Ben he could make with fun foam floor blocks.

He decorated it all himself though and we live what he's done with it.

We love the assigned seating.

Ben's First Pimple

The first pimple he got turned out to be a big one!

That left a mark.

Mover Come in about 30 hrs

May 30, 2014
We are all frazzled. Rough day. Lots of tears. Ben broke and was screaming that it was all our fault and we have all the power and he has absolutely no control of anything he ever gets to do. He's been lying and hiding stuff and freaking out. Jacob has had a fever for two plus days now. Maddie's ears are broken and she never hears a darn thing we say. Mom has a short fuse. Dad seems to keep working and ignores everything going on.

Ben needs a break so he's in the back yard playing with Ashlyn and she's living it. She follows his every move. He gets a drink, she gets a drink. He runs left she runs left. He is in happy heaven. It's past bedtime but this needs to happen now. It is beautiful to hear so much giggling again in our house even if I know it will all come apart when I say it's time to brush teeth at least they have this happy memory and moment together.

Single Mom Fail

Ben needed to do something for the family for two months for Cub Scout credit. Two months was good. Started right as Brian left to Saudi for two months. Brian is the smoothie man around here so every Friday Ben was to out what fruit he wanted on the shopping list. Sunday dinner we were to have smoothies. I checked in with him yesterday to see how it was going. He says he made the apple kind this week and we took it all over to the friends the other week and he made a double batch and then the day of this and that. We figured about four times in eight weeks. What about the other weeks? "Well
those were just really bad days and we were always in trouble and you were too tired so we didn't do it."

You Know You're and Expat When...

...your kid sees a sats gateway truck on the school campus (30 min drive from the airport) and says, "Hey, that's the trucks that do food at the airport isn't it?"

Character Dress Up Day

Today was alternate dress in the intermediate school. Can you guess what Ben chose to dress up as?

Ben in the Yearbook. He is hilarious!

Skype Gems Tonight

Skype gems tonight with Ben.

Brian was trying to explain Ramadan.
"The people wake up before the sun comes up and eat breakfast then they fast all day long and eat again after the sun goes down at night."
"So they become nocturnal?"

Ben was talking about getting rained out of something here in Singapore. Brian said he didn't know what rain was anymore.
"Rain is like a sink. The sky is the faucet. The ground is the drain."

Star Wars Cake

Here is my latest and greatest cake. I trolled the internet for inspiration and found someone that had put this awesome Star Wars idea.

I’m pretty proud of how it turned out and so grateful to my cake friend Monica who spent 3 hours with me working hard to get this put together. She had great tips and tricks that I’ll have to keep around to make caking easier on the next one.

Happy Birthday Ben!

Halal Hot Dogs?

Ben's in a great mood. He's skyping with dad tonight at 10pm. Alone. No little wild brothers or sisters to interrupt. It has been a good call. Brian tried to share a little about what he is learning and things he is seeing. He explained what "halal" means (allowable) then asked what Ben thought the word for not allowable would be. "De-halal" was the quick response.

Next question was about hot dogs. Ben asked Brian if they had seen them there. Brian thought he had. So Ben queried, "Do they just have to call them 'hot' because they can't have dogs there?" Hilarious kid.

Last one for the day. Brian tells him that we MIGHT be getting plane tickets really soon for our move. Ben says why not for sure. "Because we have to have Exxon buy some of them and that makes it slow." "But why are they slow?" ISN'T THAT THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION THESE DAYS AROUND OUR HOUSE.

Fun Kids

Ben declared the other day that all sings end in cymbal crash.

Jacob was playing air piano as we drove home today and was incredibly proud that he was getting all the bores right. Then he closed his eyes and STILL got all the notes but that wasn't enough. He ended his concert playing eyes closed, two pianos, one hand on each, and every note correct. Amazing talent.

New Family Picture

Since Ashlyn just turned 2 years old I figured it was time to update our blog header with a picture of her outside my belly. The picture that has been up forever had me only 5 or so months pregnant. Isn't this a cute family picture? Thanks to Nicole Ekberg Photography for getting some great shots of us in September of 2013...6 months ago. That's how we roll people. Always slowly...

Now I need to order prints for the grandparents sent to their respective Wal-Marts for pick up.

Stake Conference

On  way to church this morning (Stake Conference) we overheard Ben ask "Are you going to learn anything today?"
"Nope!" replied Jacob. "We aren't even going to our classes today at all."

I concede they didn't have kid class, but there were 2 hours of speakers they could have gleaned just the tiniest bit from...even a cute kid who spoke to the congregation broadcast across three buildings.

After church I asked for an update from Jacob, "Did you learn anything at church today?"

Shaking his head he said, "Not really."

Christmas Gifts to Jesus

I’m packing up the holiday stuff today. We have NEVER had the tree up this long. People who walk into our house are actually taken back to see an enormous tree still up and decorated.

It made me smile to reread our annual gifts to Jesus as I sorted through everything. For the coming year of 2014 we are giving:

Jacob: “be gooder” (not yell or hit)
Madison: “les ProBlems. (Stop! Pooshing)”
Ben: “more time in scripshers” (read daily)
Angie: “a softer voice at home”

Compare to last year:

Jacob: "Don't touch other peoples bodies. Play with friends one at a time so they feel special."
Madison: "PRAY for PeoPLe By NAMe FROM MMZ"
Ben: "be nice to Maddie and Jacob"
Angie: "Show my love by using a quiet, happy voice."
Brian: "Have more patience with my kids"
